Hazardous Materials/WMD Incident Response: Awareness (Online)

Description: This Awareness course is the first level of first responder certification. A first responder must be properly trained and mentally prepared when called upon to respond to a hazardous material or weapons of mass destruction (WMD) incident. This course will cover the necessary basics as well as the use of the Emergency Response Guidebook. The course meets the federal regulations as set by OSHA 1910.120, NFPA 472 (2008 edition) and Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP).

This course is worth 8 POST credits or 8 EMS non-core CEUs.

Students will have 60 days to complete this course from the time of enrollment

 IS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System

Course Overview

ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

The Emergency Management Institute developed its ICS courses collaboratively with:

  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG)
  • U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • United States Fire Administrations National Fire Programs Branch

IS-200.b - ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

 

Course Overview

ICS 200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS.

  • United State Fire Administration’s National Fire Programs Branch
Note: IS-200.b is an updated version of the IS-200 course. If you have successfully completed IS-200 or IS-200.a, you may want to review the new version of the course. For credentialing purposes, the courses are equivalent.

On February 28, 2003, President Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive-5. HSPD-5 directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. Course Overview

The National Response Framework (NRF) presents the guiding principles that enable all response partners to prepare for and provide a unified national response to disasters and emergencies – from the smallest incident to the largest catastrophe.  As part of the NRF, Emergency Support Functions (ESFs) are primary mechanisms at the operational level used to organize and provide assistance.  This series of courses is designed to overview each of the 15 ESFs.  This course provides an introduction to Emergency Support Function (ESF) #9 Search and Rescue.
